Frequently asked questions:

How to use a tow dolly?

A tow dolly is designed to pull a front wheel drive vehicle (car or small SUV) behind a larger vehicle. The towed vehicle is the vehicle that will be towed on the dolly. The tow dolly must be hooked up to the towing vehicle prior to loading the tow dolly. Next, the front wheels or drive wheels of the towed vehicle are driven up the ramps and placed in the wheel pans of the tow dolly. Wheel straps are then placed over top of the front wheels of the towed vehicle. The hook ends of the straps are attached mounting points behind the front wheels of the towed vehicle. The other end of the straps are fed into ratchets attached to the tow dolly ahead of the towed vehicle front wheels. Next the straps are tightened with the ratchet. In addition to the towed vehicle tied down straps, Demco provides 2 additional safety chains to act as a secondary way to secure the vehicle to the tow dolly. The towed vehicle can be secured to the dolly with steering wheel locked, keys removed from the towed vehicle and the doors of the towed can be locked. The tow dolly will turn either with a steerable axle on the dolly or by a swivel deck on top of the tow dolly. To unload the vehicle at the destination, the process to load is reversed.

Will my car fit on your Kar Kaddy?

Before towing any vehicle on a tow dolly, I always recommend checking the owner’s manual for tow ability. Today’s vehicles have different engine and transmission combinations. It is very difficult for Demco to be able to answer for every different vehicle manufacture and each different model and engine transmission combination. At the back of the manual in the Index, usually listed under Towing and sub heading of Recreational Vehicle Towing the manufacturer of the vehicle will provide information regarding if and how your vehicle can be towed behind a recreational vehicle. Once you have confirmed your vehicle can be towed on a tow dolly, there are a couple of other pieces of information and measurements needed. Demco tow dollies are capable of handling front wheel drive vehicles that are less than 4,800 pounds curb weight and are 76” or less outside of left front wheel to outside of right front wheel for the Demco Kar Kaddy 460SS and 78” or less outside of left front wheel to outside of right front wheel for the Demco Kar Kaddy X. Finally, you will want to check the load angle clearance of the vehicle. To check load angle clearance, again, we need two easy measurements from the vehicle. Follow this link to the Demco Website for an easy measure guide for load angle clearance:
